February 19th, 2010

Start Your Very Own Community Blog & Social Media Site Now – Here’s How:

We’re just getting things kicked off here at the Community Blog (CB) and we would like let you know how you can get your very own community blog and social network going here as well.

We run the CommunityBlog on a hybrid version of the robust and highly-scalable WordPress MU (Multi-User), also known as WPMU, blogging and CMS (Content Management System). This is open-source at it’s finest, folks. To get an even better idea of how great, and trusted, WPMU is go ahead and take a peek at who else is making good use of it;

WPMU Showcase (Best Buy, Wall Street Journal, Star Tribune, Comedy.com, University of Maine, NY Times, America.gov, The University of British Columbia, b5media, Harvard Law, The Times, Le Monde Newspaper, Reuters, Mozilla, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Network Solutions, Flickr, Ning, Samsung, GE, RackSpace, Carnival Cruise Lines, Flokka, TechCrunch, People, Martha Stewart, Anderson Cooper, Larry King, etc.)

There are also over 8,200 free web-site plugins to choose from on the WordPress platform;

There are also over 1,100 free custom themes to choose from as well;

And that’s just the beginning to what you can do here at the Community Blog with WordPress. Pretty cool, huh?

If you aren’t very familiar (or familiar at all) with WordPress or blogging, or could use a refresher course, then the following is just for you;

Introduction To Blogging
Getting Started With WordPress

Are you ready? Lets get started:

To open an account with us the quick and easy steps needed to be taken are as follows;

1. Figure out your preferred blog/social-networking web-site address (your CB Handle) at the Community Blog, where the XXXXXX are represented in the following example:

http://XXXXXX.CommunityBlog.com/

i.e.; If you owned a business called Seattle Sheet Metal, Inc. then you may likely request the following address;

http://SeattleSheetMetal.CommunityBlog.com/

Think along the lines of how web-site such as craigslist.org employ sub-domains, such as http://seattle.craigslist.org/ to represent each unique web property of theirs.

Upper and lower-case spelling doesn’t matter in the sub-domain TLD (top-level-domains), it’s just used for visual reference and easier reading/viewing here. Lower-case would look like the following for the above example given;

http://seattlesheetmetal.communityblog.com/

You can easily check the address before contacting us by typing it into your favorite web browser to see if it is available or not.

2. Then contact us with that address. If the address you requested is available we then confirm that you actually own or represent the business, person, place, thing, object, item, etc. The easiest way to do this is to contact us via the use of one of your official company email addresses. Such as for the above example, your business web address may be;

http://www.SeattleSheetMetalInc.com/

and you would contact us with, say for example, the following email address: johnR@SeattleSheetMetalInc.com

This lets us know that you have the authority to run and administer this web-site address for said business through the CommunityBlog.com interface.

3. We then give you a price quote for the monthly costs of hosting and maintaining your blog and social networking web-address here on the Community Blog. The prices quoted to you will fall into the following range;

  • Personal Blogs: Currently not supported
